Rotthaugsgaten

Rotthaugsgaten climbs steeply from the base of Sandviksfjellet with rows of white wooden houses pressed tight against the stone foundation of the mountain. These homes belonged to the fishermen and laborers who fueled the local trade in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the winter of eighteen ninety-five, a massive landslide tore down the slope, crushing several of these structures and burying the street in debris. The neighborhood rebuilt quickly, choosing to anchor the new foundations directly into the bedrock.
