Klostergaten

Klostergaten carries the name of the Cistercian monastery of Munkeliv, which dominated this ground from the twelfth century until the Reformation. The street follows the path that once connected the abbey to the city center. After the monastery burned for the final time in the sixteen hundreds, the area became a patchwork of small gardens and timber houses. Today, the street retains the narrow, winding character of a medieval artery, flanked by brightly painted wooden buildings that survived the urban fires of later centuries.
