Strangehagen

Strangehagen is a narrow, winding alleyway lined with low, white-painted wooden houses that survived the great fires of Bergen. In the seventeenth century, this lane housed laborers and sailors who worked the nearby wharf, living in cramped quarters where space was at a premium. Unlike the grander merchant homes elsewhere, these small structures crowded against one another, preserving a density of life from the city’s past. A stone staircase rises between the houses, leading directly into the heart of this residential grid.
