The Moravian Chapel in Zonnebloem stands out for its high-pitched gabled roof and the stark white plaster finish typical of early mission architecture. Built in eighteen thirty-four, this building served the formerly enslaved people of Cape Town after their emancipation. Architecturally, it is a plain, functional space designed to hold a congregation that had no other place to worship. In the eighteen sixties, the church hosted classes for children, marking the start of what eventually became the Zonnebloem College for mission students.
