St. Mark's Anglican Church

The tall, pointed spire of St. Mark’s Anglican Church stands out against the Zonnebloem skyline, built from rough-hewn stone that has weathered since eighteen sixty-five. Originally established to serve the residents of District Six, the church became a refuge when the apartheid government ordered the forced removal of the neighborhood's population in the nineteen sixties. While bulldozers leveled nearly every home for blocks around, the congregation refused to leave, keeping the church doors open throughout the destruction of the surrounding community.
