Christianshavns Kanal cuts a straight line through the heart of the district, bordered by cobblestones and houseboats that sit low in the dark water. King Christian the Fourth ordered the construction of this waterway in the early seventeenth century. He modeled the layout after Amsterdam to attract Dutch merchants, hoping they would settle here and handle the city's trade. A German merchant named Jonas Trellund ended up building the first house on the canal in sixteen twenty-four, and the stone foundation remains today.
