Four identical rococo mansions frame the central courtyard of Amalienborg Palace. When the original Christiansborg Palace burned to the ground in seventeen ninety-four, the royal family purchased these noble homes to use as their primary residence. King Christian the Seventh moved into one, while his brother and other aristocrats occupied the others. Today, the Danish royal family still resides within these walls. If the flag flies above the palace, the monarch is currently in Copenhagen, working from within the palace offices.
