Statue of Bishop Absalon

The bronze Bishop Absalon stands high on a granite pedestal near Højbro Plads, holding a battle axe in his right hand and a bishop’s staff in his left. He wears full chainmail beneath his vestments, a nod to his dual role as a powerful churchman and a military commander for King Valdemar the First. When he died in twelve oh one, he left behind a fortified harbor that grew into Copenhagen. He remains the city's recognized founder, cast in permanent, armored vigilance.
