North Atlantic House

The North Atlantic House occupies a long, butter-yellow warehouse stretching along the Copenhagen harbor. Built in seventeen sixty-seven, it served as the center for trade between Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. Salted fish, train oil, and wool filled these rooms for centuries. In eighteen forty-four, a fire broke out in a nearby tavern, and merchants famously dragged their heavy merchandise out onto the cobblestones, forming a human chain to save the building from the spreading flames.
