Christiansborg Palace

historic

Christiansborg Palace dominates the islet of Slotsholmen with a high, copper-clad central tower that reaches over one hundred meters into the Copenhagen sky. This site has anchored Danish power for eight hundred years, beginning with a medieval fortress built by Bishop Absalon. The current palace is the third iteration, rebuilt after the massive fires of seventeen ninety-four and eighteen eighty-four. Beneath the modern royal reception rooms and parliament chambers, the heavy masonry walls of those earlier castles remain visible in the dark, cool basement ruins.
