Copenhagen War Museum

The Tøjhus Museum features a massive, low-slung, red-brick warehouse stretching along the canal. Built in the early seventeenth century, this structure served as the Danish arsenal where King Christian the Fourth stored his cannons and ammunition. The building houses thick walls designed to contain accidental explosions from the stockpile within. In the eighteen sixties, a worker dropped a lit pipe, ignited some gunpowder, and triggered a blast that shook the city, yet the heavy masonry kept the rest of the harbor safe.
