Nyboder 17th century houses

Long, mustard-yellow rows of low-slung houses define Nyboder. King Christian the Fourth commissioned these buildings in sixteen thirty-one to house the Danish navy's personnel and their families. He wanted his sailors nearby, so he provided these barracks-style homes to secure their loyalty and skills. A single seaman, Jens Hansen, famously lived here for decades with his large family, enduring the strict military oversight that governed every resident. The narrow, repetitive streets remain a distinct pocket of seventeenth-century naval planning.
