Kastellet

The Kastellet is a star-shaped fortress with five pointed bastions rising from a surrounding moat. King Christian the Fourth built these earthworks in sixteen twenty-six to defend Copenhagen from the sea. During the German occupation in World War Two, the Danish government surrendered, and the occupying forces immediately seized the citadel for their headquarters. A local resistance group eventually blew up the main gate in nineteen forty-four, leaving behind a scarred stone archway that remains part of the wall today.
