The four-story building with a circular courtyard and a tall, ancient linden tree in its center is Regensen. King Christian the Fourth founded this dormitory in sixteen twenty-three to provide free housing for poor students attending the University of Copenhagen. While city fires and wars decimated much of the capital over the centuries, the original stone walls and the heavy timber framing of the dormitory remain. Students still live in these same rooms today, maintaining rituals established nearly four hundred years ago.
