Gateway to Christiania

The entrance to Freetown Christiania is marked by a wide, heavy gate of dark metal, topped with three yellow circles on a red background. In nineteen seventy-one, a group of squatters tore down the fence of this abandoned military barracks to create a playground for their children. The military abandoned the site, but the residents stayed, declaring the area a self-governing commune. Today, the gate remains the threshold between the laws of the Danish state and the internal rules of the community.
