The Round Tower rises above the Copenhagen skyline as a red-brick cylinder with a wide, spiraling ramp winding inside instead of stairs. King Christian the Fourth ordered its construction in the seventeenth century to serve as an astronomical observatory for the university. Peter the Great of Russia famously drove a horse and carriage all the way to the top during his visit in seventeen sixteen, proving the stability of the design. The tower remains one of the oldest functioning observatories in Europe today.
