Frue Plads

Frue Plads features a cobblestone surface framed by the yellow brick facade of the University of Copenhagen’s main building. Since the nineteenth century, the square has served as the academic heart of the city. During the bombardment of Copenhagen in eighteen oh seven, British forces destroyed the original medieval cathedral that stood here. University architect Peder Malling rebuilt the site in the eighteen thirties, choosing a severe neoclassical style that reflected the Enlightenment values central to the institution.
