Burgplatz

The Burgplatz in Düsseldorf features a solitary, cylindrical tower leaning slightly toward the Rhine. This brick structure is the lone survivor of the original ducal castle, which burned down in eighteen seventy-two after a laundry fire spread through the wooden interior. Duke Wilhelm the Rich once lived within those walls, hosting extravagant courts that defined the city in the sixteenth century. Today, the space serves as a wide open square where the city center meets the riverbank, framed by the water and the tower.
