Pegeluhr

historic

The Pegeluhr stands along the Rhine embankment as a tall, slender pillar topped with a four-faced clock. It shows the current water level of the river with a large pointer on a gauge, while the clock faces keep time for passersby. In nineteen fifty-five, the city installed this tower to replace a smaller, less visible gauge. Boat captains navigated by these numbers for decades, watching the Rhine rise and fall against the stone quay before the gauge became a landmark for the city.
