Spee'scher Graben

The Spee'scher Graben is a narrow, crescent-shaped pond tucked against the edge of the Carlstadt district. It follows the curve of what was once the city’s southern defensive wall. Back in the eighteenth century, Count Maximilian von Spee bought the adjacent palace and took over the maintenance of this moat, turning a utilitarian fortification into a landscaped garden feature. Swans still glide past the weeping willows, a quiet vestige of the private park that occupied this space for generations.
