The Heinrich Heine monument features a stark, vertical stone slab carved with the poet’s portrait in profile, set within a quiet, rectangular garden. It sits on the site where the poet’s father once ran a successful textile business. Heine faced long years of exile in France, and for decades, his hometown in Düsseldorf refused to host a memorial to him. This particular stone finally arrived in nineteen eighty-one, a gift from sculptor Bert Gerresheim that settled a century of local arguments about honoring the author.
