Heinrich-Heine-Institut

The Heinrich Heine Institute in the Carlstadt district occupies a classic nineteenth-century mansion, easily identified by the stone commemorative plaque embedded near the entrance. This building functions as the primary archive and museum for the life of Düsseldorf’s most famous poet. In nineteen twenty-five, the city bought the collection of Heine’s manuscripts, letters, and personal effects from a private collector to keep them from being sold off. The archive preserves these thousands of fragile pages, documenting his restless life in exile.
