Schumann-Haus

The Schumann-Haus in Düsseldorf features a plain, four-story stone facade punctuated by a dark green door. Robert and Clara Schumann moved into this building in eighteen fifty-two, living there for two years during Robert’s final, most troubled period as the city’s music director. He spent his nights composing in a small upstairs room, often while Clara tended to their growing family. When Robert suffered a mental collapse, the neighbors heard his piano playing turn erratic, eventually leading to his departure for an asylum.
