Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal

The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal features a bronze bust of the poet resting on a granite pedestal, surrounded by a swirling group of bronze figures from his literary works. Düsseldorf struggled for decades to memorialize its famous native son, whose sharp political satire and Jewish heritage made him a controversial figure in his home country. In nineteen thirteen, a committee finally commissioned the sculptor Hugo Lederer to create this piece. It remains a rare, defiant celebration of Heine standing in the heart of the city.
