Hofgarten

The Hofgarten is the oldest public park in Düsseldorf, defined by a sweeping expanse of greenery that stretches from the edge of the city center toward the Rhine. Elector Karl Theodor commissioned this space in seventeen sixty-nine to bring the garden style of the Enlightenment to his subjects. When French troops occupied the city in seventeen ninety-four, they removed the fortifications that once separated the residents from these lawns, allowing the gardens to become the lungs of the city.
