Rheinuferpromenade

The Rheinuferpromenade is a wide, tree-lined path that follows the curve of the Rhine River with a surface of distinct, wave-patterned mosaic stones. Until the early nineteen nineties, this space served as a bustling four-lane highway carrying heavy traffic between the river and the city. City planners moved the entire road underground into a tunnel, reclaiming the riverbank for pedestrians. A local architect named Niklaus Fritschi designed the mosaic walkway to mimic the rhythmic motion of the water alongside it.
