The rusted, spindly skeletons of these harbor cranes tower over the Rhine, their articulated arms frozen in mid-air. Once essential for hoisting steel and coal from barges onto the docks, they transitioned into relics when the port shifted its focus to offices and media firms. In the nineteen nineties, the city decided to preserve them rather than scrap them. They remain as steel sentinels of the industrial age, marking the spot where the city once lived by the rhythm of the river.
