SchifffahrtMuseum

The SchifffahrtMuseum occupies the Schlossturm, the sole remaining structure of a seventeenth century palace that burned down in eighteen seventy-two. Its rounded, whitewashed walls and tall, conical tower stand out against the flat riverfront. Inside, the museum tracks the development of Rhine shipping, from early wooden rafts to modern freight technology. In nineteen seventy-eight, the city repurposed this former defensive tower as a maritime exhibition space. It holds the oldest surviving parts of a castle that once defined this city.
