Basilika St. Lambertus

The tower of St. Lambertus Basilica leans visibly to the north. Local legend claims the devil once tried to topple the church, tripped over his own feet, and left the spire crooked in his frustration. A more grounded explanation blames the use of unseasoned, damp timber in the eighteen hundreds, which warped as the wood dried. Whatever the cause, the spire remains twisted and thin, dominating the skyline of the old town as it has since the fourteenth century.
