Virgin Mary shrine

religious

The small, glass-encased statue of the Virgin Mary sits tucked into a stone niche along the steep incline of the hillside streets. This shrine appeared after a local woman, worried for her son during a violent storm in the nineteen fifties, placed the figure there to watch over the neighborhood. She believed the street’s dangerous, slippery path required divine oversight. Neighbors still leave fresh flowers and flickering candles inside the alcove, keeping the glass clean against the salt air and tropical humidity.
