The former British Consulate in Tangier is a heavy, rectangular stone building with high arched windows and a doorway framed in carved dark wood. It served as the heart of British diplomatic life here for decades. In the eighteen sixties, the consul general, Sir John Drummond Hay, entertained everyone from wandering explorers to visiting royalty within these walls. He held so much influence over the local sultan that people joked he was the true power ruling Morocco, even from inside his office.
