Bab Al Fahs Gate

The Bab Al Fahs gate is a thick, horseshoe arch built of weathered stone that marks the main western entry into the Tangier Medina. It sits where the old city walls meet the bustle of the modern port district. In nineteen twelve, a local merchant named Ahmed Raisuli famously seized this gateway to protest European influence, shutting the passage and demanding ransom for its reopening. The gate remains the primary threshold between the quiet, winding alleys of the inner city and the streets beyond.
