Gran Teatro Cervantes

The Gran Teatro Cervantes stands apart with its weathered, yellow-ochre facade and the crumbling, grand ornamentation that once signaled the height of Spanish influence in Tangier. Built in nineteen thirteen by a wealthy couple, Manuel Pena and Esperanza Orellana, the theater served as the cultural heart of the city for decades. It hosted opera stars like Enrico Caruso and served as a meeting point for the city’s international residents, until the mid-twentieth century when it fell into silent, prolonged disrepair.
