Petit Socco

The Petit Socco is a small, sloping concrete square defined by the low, arched doorways of the surrounding cafes and the intense, constant movement of people. In the early twentieth century, this patch of ground held the pulse of international Tangier. While diplomats and financiers negotiated the city's fate in grander buildings, writers like Paul Bowles and William Burroughs sat at these tables to watch the street life. They came because the square offered a view of everyone passing through this Mediterranean port.
