The Mendoubia Garden is marked by a massive, centuries-old banyan tree that dominates the space with its sprawling, tangled roots. This site once served as the headquarters for the Mendoub, the official representative of the Sultan in Tangier when the city operated as an international zone. In nineteen forty-seven, Sultan Mohammed the Fifth stood beneath the shade of that very tree to deliver a speech that called for the independence of Morocco, effectively challenging the colonial powers gathered in the city.
