The Tangier American Legation is a five-story building of layered, white-painted masonry tucked into the dense alleyways of the old medina. It stands as the only United States National Historic Landmark located on foreign soil. In seventeen eighty-six, the Sultan of Morocco gifted this property to the young American government to house its diplomatic mission. While the United States opened many legations across the globe, this is the only one the country actually owned during that era of early international diplomacy.
