Grand Socco

The Grand Socco functions as the primary junction between the old walled medina and the modern city of Tangier. It is recognizable by the large, circular plaza that opens up beneath the towering minaret of the Sidi Bou Abib Mosque, which is covered in vibrant, multicolored tilework. Here, in nineteen forty-seven, Sultan Mohammed Ben Youssef delivered a famous speech supporting the independence of Morocco. Traders still gather daily to sell mint, olives, and fabrics, just as they have for generations.
