BaB El Assa

Bab el Assa features a heavy, horseshoe-shaped archway built from thick, rough-hewn stone that contrasts with the whitewashed walls surrounding it. Local tradition calls it the Gate of the Stick, a name tied to the guards who once stood watch here. They supposedly used wooden staves to turn away travelers who arrived after the city gates were locked for the night. This portal served as a strict filter for the old city, separating the quiet residential quarters from the busy marketplace activities.
