Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish Cemetery in the Tangier medina covers a steep hillside, identifiable by its thousands of white, rounded headstones that seem to spill downward toward the sea. Jews lived in Tangier for centuries, and this site served as their final resting place for generations. In nineteen forty-three, a British official named Sir Andrew Ryan was buried here, becoming the only non-Jewish person interred in this ground. He had requested it specifically, asking to lie among the community he lived beside for years.
