Bab Kasbah

The Bab Kasbah is a massive stone gateway framed by two thick, rectangular towers that guard the entrance to the highest point of the Tangier medina. Sultan Moulay Ismail commissioned this gate in the late seventeenth century after his troops forced the English to abandon the city. The stone arches bear deep, weathered carvings, and the metal studs on the heavy wooden doors still show the marks of centuries of use. It remains the threshold between the city's crowded market streets and the walled fortress.
