Tangier Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque of Tangier stands out for its tall, octagonal minaret covered in vibrant green and white zellij tilework. It occupies a site that has hosted religious structures since the Roman era, when a temple to Hercules supposedly stood here. During the period of English control in the seventeenth century, the building was converted into a church, only to be reclaimed and expanded into a mosque when the Sultan Moulay Ismail recaptured the city in sixteen eighty-four.
