Kjøttbasaren

Kjøttbasaren features a distinctive octagonal tower and dark, rusticated stone walls that anchor the corner of the square. Built in eighteen seventy-seven, this hall served as the city’s central meat market. Before it opened, butchers operated from crude stalls exposed to the wet Bergen climate. When the market arrived, it moved the trade indoors under a glass roof, housing stalls for meat, game, and fish. In the nineties, the building shifted from a butcher’s hall into a space for restaurants and shops.
