The Hanseatic Museum occupies a timber building painted a deep, ochre red, distinguished by its overhanging wooden galleries facing the harbor. For four centuries, German merchants from the Hanseatic League controlled the stockfish trade here, living under strict, celibate rules in these cramped quarters. During the great fire of seventeen oh two, the merchant Johan von Winthem famously ordered his apprentices to carry the heavy trade records to safety, ensuring the ledger of debts and shipments survived even as the neighborhood burned.
