The mural of Jan Heweliusz covers the side of a tall tenement building in the Old Town, showing the astronomer staring directly at the night sky. He holds a sextant, surrounded by the star maps he drew by hand in the seventeenth century. Heweliusz spent his life here in Gdansk, famously discovering four new constellations and mapping the moon’s surface from his rooftop observatory. When a fire destroyed his home and his life’s work, he rebuilt his equipment and finished his books before he died.
