The Davenport House features a Federal-style staircase that curves in a delicate spiral, floating without visible support. Isaiah Davenport, a master builder from Rhode Island, finished this home in eighteen twenty for his young family. He died only seven years later, leaving his widow, Sarah, to run the house as a boarding operation to survive. When a wrecking crew arrived to demolish the structure in nineteen fifty-five, seven women formed the Historic Savannah Foundation to buy and save it from destruction.
