The Green-Meldrim House features an intricate brownstone facade, a rarity in a city built largely of brick and wood. Sir Charles Green, a wealthy cotton merchant, completed this Gothic Revival mansion in eighteen fifty-three. During the Civil War, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman claimed the house as his headquarters after capturing Savannah. He famously sent a telegram to President Lincoln from here, offering him the city as a Christmas gift along with one hundred fifty heavy guns and plenty of ammunition.
