Old Harbor Light

The Old Harbor Light stands as a squat, white brick tower on the Savannah riverfront, topped by a dark, octagonal lantern room. Built in eighteen fifty-five, it once guided ships into the harbor with a kerosene lamp. The light stayed active for decades, but the river eventually shifted its course, leaving the tower behind. During a cold night in the winter of eighteen ninety, a lighthouse keeper named Thomas Humes died while tending the lamp, leaving the tower dark for the first time.
