Madison Square is distinguished by the bronze statue of Sergeant William Jasper, who stands with his rifle, gazing toward the west. This public space commemorates the seventeen seventy-nine Siege of Savannah, where Jasper died while trying to rescue his regiment's colors during the failed assault on the British lines.
