Wright Square

Wright Square is marked by a massive, rough-hewn granite boulder that sits in the center of the manicured lawn. This stone serves as a monument to Tomochichi, the Yamacraw chief who welcomed James Oglethorpe to the Georgia coast in seventeen thirty-three. Tomochichi provided the land and the diplomacy necessary for the colony to survive its first years. When he died in seventeen thirty-nine, the British governor ordered that he be buried with full military honors right here in the town square.
