The white steeple of the Independent Presbyterian Church rises two hundred feet above Bull Street, capped by a copper dome that shines after a rain. This building replaced an earlier sanctuary that burned to the ground in eighteen eighty-nine, taking the church’s original records with it. A local architect named William Gibbons Preston designed this replacement, modeling the sanctuary after the church’s own lost eighteenth-century interior. Woodrow Wilson married Ellen Axson here in eighteen eighty-five, back when the previous building still stood.
